Tenant zone : Sheltered & Extra Care
Extra Care

Extra Care housing developments also called very sheltered housing or assisted living accommodation are a growing and popular part of the housing with care market.  Most 'extra care' consumers are older people and they often find it attractive because it offers them independant living in a home of their own with other services on hand if they need or want them.

Extra care housing is gaining a reputation for being able to accommodate people who would otherwise be frequent users of acute services, largely because their housing is unsuitable for them to self-care.  It is also arguably a better accomodation option than long-term for older people unable to return home after a period in hospital because their housing is unsuitable - a proportion of whom are often referred to as 'delayed discharges'.

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing is specially designed accommodation available to rent or for sale, mainly for older people.

There are lots of variations between sheltered housing schemes.  However they usually provide many of the following features:
  • Self contained flats or studio rooms with their own bathrooms and fitted kitchens
  • Laundry
  • Communal lounge for a variety of social activities
  • Gardens
  • Guest Room
  • Security and safety features
  • A scheme manager or resident scheme manager
  • 24 hour emergency assistance through connection of each flat to a call centre
