Basic Facts
If you are in debt, you are not alone. The total UK personal debt at the end of October 2008 stood at £1,455 billion pounds.
People get into debt for many reasons, your circumstances may change, a relationship may break down or you may have a long illness. Sometimes small debts just build up and get out of control.
Cosmopolitan Housing Association have advice to help you avoid or reduce debt and make the most of your money.

There are good and bad ways to deal with debt, here are some Do's and Don'ts of repaying your debt.
Do's
Do Get Advice
REMEMBER THAT CALLS TO 0800 NUMBERS ARE NOT FREE WHEN YOU DIAL FROM A MOBILE
Do get in touch with your creditors
Do give priority to those debts which could mean you lose your home or your gas or electricity supply
Do reply to letters from your creditors
Do keep copies of all letters and statements
Do work out a personal budget
Do avoid getting into debt again in future
Don'ts
Don't give up trying to reach an agreement
Don't let your creditor bully or threaten you into making a promise that you can't keep.
Don't borrow more money to pay off your debts, especially by taking on more credit or store cards. This will just increase your debt and make the problem worse.
Don't ignore the problem
