WIRRAL MAYOR OPENS NEW £4.1M ECO-FRIENDLY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN WALLASEY
![]() A new £4.1m development of 36 new eco-friendly homes for rent was officially opened on Friday, 3 February 2012 by the Mayor of Wirral Cllr Moira McLaughlin at Rice Lane and Springfield Place, off King Street, Wallasey.
Residents and local school representatives joined members of Cosmopolitan Housing Association, Wirral Council and the Homes & Communities Agency, to witness the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
Previously a street of terraced houses dating back to1919, the site has been redeveloped by Cosmopolitan Housing Association and Lovell Partnerships Ltd to provide 36 new homes which include a mix of two, three and four bedroom bungalows and houses......read more
APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR TOXTETH RESIDENTS
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Wates will be holding a big recruitment event on Tuesday, 7 February 2012 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool. They want to hear from residents in Toxteth who would like to register for an apprenticeship opportunity in the construction industry. Successful applicants will be involved in building the Toxteth Fire Fit Hub. Other providers and employers will be present to take your registrations for various opportunities across Merseyside. OUTSPOKEN CELEBRATE LGBT HISTORY MONTH
![]() Arena Housing are hosting an event to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month 2012 on Wednesday, 29 February 2012 from 10am-1pm at Sefton Park Community Centre, Liverpool 17. The event will include special guest speakers from the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, the Albert Kennedy Trust and Press for Change. Wirral Council and Liverpool City Council is joining forces with Pine Court Housing Association to provide Merseyside teenagers with the chance of a life-changing exchange visit to Hong Kong. Young people who sign up for the visit, which is sponsored by Cosmopolitan Student Homes, a member of the Cosmopolitan Housing Group, will spend two weeks in China's economic powerhouse taking part in cultural, educational and sightseeing activities. They will also host a visit from their Chinese contemporaries when they visit Merseyside. As well as taking part in the visit, they will fund-raise for the trip and take part in awareness activities to learn more about their host country. Successful applicants will not have to provide accommodation in their own homes, and applications are invited from people of all abilities and backgrounds. Young people who are chosen will have to pay £250, but will be given help to fundraise and help will be available in cases of hardship....read more
PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
![]() Know any young people aged 11-17 who might be interested in getting involved in an exciting new drama project with Perform L8 Drama Group, ending in performances at Liverpool's Unity Theatre in March? Then get them to the "Meet the Team" audition at Lipa, (Mount Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L1 9HF) next Wednesday, 11 January at 3.30 pm. The project is called "Love Hurts" and is being supported by the Liverpool City Council Arts in the Community Fund. The final performances will explore Young People's attitudes to Healty Relationships in drama, song and dance. NEW 'EXTRA CARE' HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN KIRBY IS RENAMED IN HONOUR OF DEDICATED LOCAL MAN
![]() A brand new housing with care scheme for older people in Kirkby has been renamed Bailey Court in honour of local resident, the late Mr Bill Bailey.
Work is now steaming ahead at the development which is being built on the site of the former Holly Vale sheltered flats on James Holt Avenue. Completion is expected in August 2012 when the scheme will provide 34 purpose built apartments for older people with individualised care packages and a qualified on site care team. The building will also include a dining room/restaurant, hair salon, assisted bathing room, IT suite and an attractive landscaped courtyard garden, complete with an ornamental lake and sitting out areas....read more
MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT COLLEAGUES' JOINT CONFERENCE
![]() Colleagues attended Cosmopolitan Housing Group's first colleagues' conference where an ambitious social agenda for the new Group was explored following a recent £1.3 billion merger. ![]() A group of residents from Liverpool were wisked away by Cosmopolitan Housing Association last week, to a cookery session at the Can Cook Studio at Liverpool's Matchworks in Speke. Residents from Falkner Terrace and Upper Parliament Street spent the afternoon watching chef demonstrations and taking part in practical sessions. At the end of the day the group sat together in the Can Cook dining room to enjoy the meals they had prepared....read more
It's all systems go as Chester & District Housing Trust's Board gives the green light to join the newly revised Cosmopolitan Housing Group. BE SAFE CONFERENCE
Over 350 residents had the opportunity to discuss
Anti Social Behaviour issues at the Be Safe Conference held at St Georges Hall, Liverpool in October. Representatives from many different agencies including The Fire Service, Police Authority, Victim Support and Housing Associations took part in a Question and Answer session using electronic voting to make the event more interactive. The conference highlighted to communities that Anti Social Behaviour will not be tolerated and victims will always have a strong support network. ![]() The night sky was illuminated by more than a combination of lanterns and pumpkins this week as local families came together for an annual lantern parade, held at Olive Mount Gardens in Wavertree.
The 150 Strong procession went from the entrance of Olive Mount Gardens at Mill Lane, Wavertree and finished at the other end of the gardens at Thingwall Lane where members of Olive Mount Community Centre Management Group served hot soup to everyone who took part in the event, as well as spectators..read more
BUILDING TOGETHER
![]() Earlier this year, the joint communications group was set up to design and oversee all bulletins to residents about the ongoing merger proposals for Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) to join the Cosmopolitan Housing Group. The joint communications plan was launched following the issue of a first residents' bulletin from Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) last Autumn and a further newsletter from Cosmopolitan Housing Association (CHA) in April. OLYMPIC SPIRIT BURNS BRIGHT AT HOMELESS GAMES
Well over 400 people took part in this year's Homeless Games in Liverpool.
![]() This unique event was open to anyone in the North West aged 18 and over who is homeless, or has been within the last two years. Described by some as the Homeless Olympics, the two-day event at Wavertree Sports Park saw competitors take part in events such as swimming, football, cycling, badminton and even some 'alternative' sports such as chess, pool and tiddlywinks! In its second year, the Homeless Games is the brainchild of Anfield man Eric Houghton, 46. The father-of-two became homeless himself after a series of family bereavements saw his life spiral out of control. Eric lost his family, home and job and fell into alcohol abuse, before turning his life around by taking part in the 2002 Homeless World Cup....read more
INVESTMENT INTO NEW ECO-HOMES FOR ELLESMERE PORT
Residents were welcomed to an open day for a major new development of 37 homes for
rent in Ellesmere Port which will reduce heating and water costs by using solar energy. Cosmopolitan Housing Association and Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) welcomed local residents at an informal open event to launch the Westminster Road development of 37 two-bed homes. The scheme attracted funding from the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) as part of the National Affordable Housing Programme.The open day marked the start of a programme of increasing the supply of new homes across the whole of Cheshire West, including Ellesmere Port & Neston, through a new relationship between Cosmopolitan and Chester & District Housing Trust. In total, the partnership between Cosmopolitan and CDHT will create 1,058 new homes across Cheshire West & Chester over the next few years.....read more
CELEBRATIONS AS WIRRAL DAY CENTRE
IS REVAMPED AND RENAMED
![]() Staff, residents and members of the local community came together recently to celebrate the relaunch of a well-established day centre at Cardigan Avenue in Birkenhead. The newly refurbished Fusion Centre was officially re-opened by Deputy Lord Mayor Gerry Ellis who attended the event with his wife, Margaret Ellis. Formerly known as the Vincent Harkins Day Centre, the facility has been providing day care for older people since it opened 24 years ago in 1987. Improvements were carried out to the whole building and the centre was given a new name to give it a modern feel in a bid to encourage more local people and community groups to use the resource....read more
MERGER PROPOSAL WITH COSMOPOLITAN HOUSING GROUP
The story so far....Both Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) and Cosmopolitan Housing Association (CHA) hve been consulting with residents about the proposal for CDHT to join a new Cosmopolitan Housing Group (CHG). Thanks to those of you who came along to a consultation event or provided us with feedback and questions. A joint Residents Group from both organisations has now been set up to guide, edit and produce all future newsletters about the merger. MERSEYSIDE'S PENSIONERS GO HEAD TO HEAD IN
Wii BOWLING TOURNAMENT
![]() Elderly residents from sheltered housing schemes across Liverpool and Wirral are going head to head in a virtual Ten Pin Bowling tournament to help them get fit. The first Wii game was held on Wednesday, 22 June at Olive Mount in Wavertree, where residents, some in their 80's, beat opponents from John Willis House by 3 strikes.
Cosmopolitan Housing Association has been working with Health for Housing to set up the teams and organise a league. A series of taster sessions were held in the run up to the tournament resulting in the formation of three teams from Olive Mount, Rose Court in Birkenhead and John Willis House in Rock Ferry.....read more

![]() Staff at Cosmopolitan Housing Association proved they can laugh at themselves when they donned curly wigs, moustaches, shell suits and hair rollers for a charity 'Scouse Day', on Thursday (12/5). Around 50 staff got into the spirit of things to help raise over £200 for a children's orgphanage in Mangalore, India. Staff paid £5 each for a two course lunch of traditional scouse served with crusty bread and pickled cabbage, followed by apple pie or chocolate gateaux....read more
YOUNG LIVERPOOL FILM MAKERS FOCUS ON THE TRAUMA OF TEENAGE BULLYING AND SUICIDE
![]() Cosmopolitan has teamed up with Liverpool based film company Copperwood Media, to launch a film by young people about bullying and suicide. The film was launched to journalists and professionals concerned with young people's welfare and education on Wednesday (11/5) at Liverpool John Moores' lecture theatre on Marybone in Liverpool.
The hard- hitting film called '45 Seconds and Counting' was written and produced by a group of young people from Liverpool aged between 14 and 21 about the issues surrounding bullying and suicide, which is the largest cause of death for 15-24 year olds in the UK....read more
FUNDRAISERS BRAVE THE WET WEATHER TO RAISE MONEY FOR AN ORPHANAGE IN MANGALORE, INDIA
![]() Residents and volunteers of Halton YMCA walked through the rain along the Wirral coastal path....and back again on Sunday (15/5) to raise money for medical supplies for an orphanage in Mangalore that cares for children with HIV and AIDS.
Armed with packed lunches and plenty of water, the group set off for Seacombe Ferry at 11 am and walked to West Kirby and then back to New Brighton, taking them a total of 4 hours and raising £250 towards their target.....read more
HALTON RESIDENTS CELEBRATE THE ROYAL WEDDING AND FURTHER REFURBISHMENT WORKS TO THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTRE
The Lodge Community Centre on Whitchurch Way, Runcorn was a hive of activity last Friday, 29 May as local families came together to enjoy double celebrations. The Lodge Community Group organised the free event to celebrate the Royal wedding and unveil further refurbishment works that have recently been completed at the community centre.
The event was a great success with all ages and included magic tricks, a table top sale, face painting and a bouncy castle as well as refreshments....read more
NEW ERA FOR SCARISBRICK PROPERTY AS APARTMENTS ARE COMPLETED

A brand new housing with care scheme for older people in Kirby is to go ahead.
Cosmopolitan Housing Association has unveiled its plans for a development of 34 apartments at Holly Vlae, on James Holt Avenue following confirmation of investment from the Homes and Communities Agency. Work began in January to demolish a dilapidated former sheltered housing scheme on the site which had lain empty and boarded up for the past year. The 'extra care scheme' that will replace it will take around 18 months to build. When completed, around Autumn 2012, it will offer 34 apartments for rent to older people, with individual care packages available from a qualified on-site care team.

OWL AND PUSSYCAT MAKES WAY FOR NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES
![]() Cosmopolitan Housing Association has started work this week on its new housing scheme in Egerton, Skelmersdale, the association's first development in the area.
Formerly home to a derelict public house, The Owl & Pussycat, which had lain empty since 2009, the site will soon offer nine much needed 3-bedroom homes for affordable rent, with completion of the development due in October 2011. Click here to read more

![]() A date has been set for the demolition of a dilapidated former sheltered housing scheme on James Holt Avenue in Holly Vale, Kirkby. On 24th January 2011 demolition experts J.P Tisdale Ltd will begin to demolish the disused building which has lain empty and boarded up since January 2010. Cosmopolitan Housing Association purchased the site from Anchor Trust in March 2010 and hopes to replace the old building with a new extra-care scheme for older people in the commmunity. FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR SUPPORTED HOUSING CONVERSION IN KENSINGTON, LIVERPOOL
![]() Local residents and potential service users had a chance this week to see how the planned conversion of a derelict grade II listed building in Kensington will provide much needed accommodation for people with physical and learning disabilities. Cosmopolitan Housing Association has been granted planning permission to redevelop the former elderly persons home on Holly Road, Kensington, in partnership with L'Arche, a Christian based support provider. ROCKFERRY RESIDENTS RAISE £250 FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
![]() Proud tenants of John Willis House sheltered housing scheme in Rock Ferry, Wirral, presented a cheque for £250 to Macmillan Cancer Support this month. Tenants got baking and then sold their home made cakes at two coffee mornings held in October. Money raised from cake sales coupled with donations from both residents and helpers totalled £250. Tenants Maria Ashcroft and John Scott presented the cheque to Gillian Wilson, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support at the scheme. Click here to read more
AGE BARRIERS BROKEN DOWN IN BOOTLE AS RESIDENTS DANCE, COOK AND GO CAMPING TOGETHER
![]() Residents from four Bootle neighbourhoods have been celebrating their success in helping to bridge the generation gap and strengthen their community. With support and funding from Evolve Neighbourhood Regeneration, local children, teenagers, adults and pensioners have come together to organise a series of events for all to enjoy.
The 'Expanding Futures for Communities' project has seen over 80 residents aged from 11 up to 70 taking part in dancing lessons, a three day camping and outdoor pursuits trip, bingo sessions, a canal cruise and a 'Come Dine With Me' style cooking contest, click here for more information
